Septic Maintenance Tips

WHAT TO DO

DO have regular inspections of your system and pump your tank as necessary. Pump your tank every 3-5 years. Average indoor water use in a typical single family home is almost 70 gallons per person per day.  Leaky toilets can was as much as 200 gallons per day.

DO use water efficiently. Fix leaky faucets and running toilets.
  
WHAT NOT TO DO
·DO NOT dispose of household wastes or any hazardous chemicals in sinks and toilets.
·DO NOT Plant trees or bushes around your septic system as roots may clog and damage the drain field or tank.
·DO NOT drive or park your vehicle on any part of your septic system as this might damage the pipes, or tank as the soil is compacted.
  
TIPS AND PREVENTION
·
Upgrade your toilet to high efficiency. Toilets account for 25-30% of household water use. Most older homes have toilets with 3.5-5 gallon tanks, newer high efficiency toilets use 1.6 gallons of water or less per flush.

Before having a large party, have your septic system inspected and pumped.
